Uganda records 11 more coronavirus cases

Uganda has confirmed 11 new COVID-19 cases from 2,949 samples tested on Saturday, ministry of Health has said. This brings the number of cases confirmed in Uganda to 696.

The cases were confirmed from 2,949 samples that were tested on Saturday from different testing points in the country. Three of the cases were truckers who entered the country from South Sudan via Elegu and three others from Kenya via Malaba points of entry. Others include one front line health worker and four cases among contacts and alerts from Buikwe, Lira, and Adjumani and Amuru districts. So far 28 front line health workers have tested positive for coronavirus.

On Saturday, the minister of Health Dr Jane Ruth Aceng said that Uganda has entered the third stage of infection of COVID-19 following an increase in the number of community cases.

Stage three is deemed the most deadly stage by experts with cases reported everywhere with no trace of how exactly they could have got infected. The World Health Organization said the rate of infection of the novel coronavirus is accelerating across Africa.

The WHO warned Thursday it took 98 days to reach 100,000 cases on the continent and just 19 days to reach 200,000 cases. South Africa, which has one of the highest coronavirus rates on the continent, is representative of the rapid surge in cases and deaths.

Yesterday, June 13 at least 203 people were reported dead while 8,105 new cases were confirmed in Africa. The WHO said South Africa is the hardest-hit country, accounting for 25 per cent of the continentโ€™s total cases.

Breakdown of cases 

South Africa

South Africa lost another 69 on Saturday and registered 3,809. Mozambique recorded 44 new cases scaling it’s confirmed cases to 553. In Malawi, one more person died (total 5) and 48 new cases (total 529). Eswatini recorded 14 new cases (total 486). In Zimbabwe 13 new cases (total 356) were registered.

In Angola, one more person died (total 6) an 8 new cases (total 138) were registered yesterday. In Botswana 12 new case (total 60) were recorded. In Namibia, one more person was confirmed positive to raise its national talk to 32.

East Africa/Central Africa

In Kenya 4 more people died (total 100) and new 152 (total 3,457). Rwanda recorded 31 new cases (total 541) yesterday. In Ethiopia, 8 more died (total 55) while 251 new cases (total 3,166) were recorded. In Somalia, 2 two patients (total 87) while 66 were confirmed to raise the national tally to 2,579. Mayotte with a total of 28 deaths registered 14 new cases (total 2,282) yesterday.

The Central Africa Republic with total 7 deaths recorded 13 new cases (total 2,057). In South Sudan 3 died more people died (total 27) and 23 new cases (total 1,682) were registered. Madagascar recorded 22 new cases (total 1,252). In Cape Verde, 29 new cases (726) were registered.

Sao Tome and Principe registered 20 new cases (total 659). Comoros recorded 12 new cases (total 176) and 2 deaths. Eritrea recorded 24 new cases (total 65). In Sudan, there were 14 new deaths (total 447) and 128 new cases (7,007). DRC registered 5 new deaths (total 106) and 87 new cases (total 4,724) while Djibouti recorded 3 new deaths (total 41) and 8 new cases (total 4,449).
