Four arrested as Elephant deaths in Kenya’s Amboseli ecosystem rise to 18
Kenyan authorities have arrested four people and seized potentially toxic chemicals as they investigate the suspected poisoning of 18 elephants in the Amboseli ecosystem.
The arrests come as preliminary findings point to possible cyanide poisoning, with investigators examining whether pesticide-contaminated tomatoes from farms bordering wildlife habitats may have exposed the animals to the toxic substance.
The suspects are being treated as persons of interest, while authorities pursue another individual believed to have information relevant to the investigation.
During a search in Tikondo, Kimana, investigators recovered toxic and unlabeled chemicals believed to have originated from a neighbouring country. The substances have been secured for further scientific testing.
The first 15 elephant deaths were recorded between June 24 and July 24. The number has since risen to 18, prompting intensified laboratory testing, environmental sampling and security investigations.
Amboseli is internationally known for its elephant population and is an important wildlife tourism destination in southern Kenya.
Authorities say the investigation is still ongoing and that the preliminary findings must be scientifically verified. Kenya’s government has warned that anyone found to have unlawfully killed or poisoned wildlife will face prosecution.
The case has also raised concerns about the handling and misuse of hazardous chemicals around wildlife habitats, as investigators work to establish exactly how the elephants were exposed.
