Saving orphaned chimpanzees in Liberia
An American couple has leased a small forest in Liberia to resettle orphaned chimpanzees.
The couple, James and Jenny Desmond, are the co-founders of the Liberia Chimpanzee Rescue and Protection charity, and they have been raising dozens of youngsters whose parents have been killed by hunters.
Sixty-two orphaned Liberian chimps are to get a new home in the land where facilities are being set up.
Mr Desmond told the BBC’s Newsday programme they wanted to preserve the indigenous species hence the idea to create a safe space for the chimps.
“It’s been quite an undertaking, we broke ground early this year and we are getting close to the end of the first phase of construction,” he said.
