Unesco lists couscous as intangible cultural heritage
The United Nations has added the North African dish of couscous to its list of the world’s intangible cultural heritage.
Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, and Mauritania together submitted the dish in a joint bid to Unesco.
Their Arab Maghreb Union, which also includes Libya, has not met since 1994.
In a statement, Unesco says the listing is part of its efforts to encourage multinational awards in order to bring peoples and cultures closer together.
