UN warns of ‘worsening humanitarian’ crisis in Mozambique
The United Nations has warned of a worsening humanitarian crisis in northern Mozambique, where an Islamist insurgency has forced hundreds of thousands of people from their homes.
A senior official from the UN refugee agency Angele Dikongue-Atanga said terrorism was the main cause.
But during a visit to Cabo Delgado province, she also referred to inequality in the region, which is at the centre of a gas exploration boom.
There’s growing criticism of the Mozambican government’s handling of the crisis, with allegations of human rights abuses and widespread corruption.
