Arrests in Kampala during the second and final day of the presidential nomination exercise.

More than 50 people were arrested from Kampala Metropolitan area during the second and final day of the presidential nomination exercise.

Police says by 3 pm, at least 49 suspects had already been arrested by security agencies, and that majority of those detained are supporters of the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) and Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) particularly those who attempted to escort their leaders to and from the nomination venue at Kyambogo University.

Security personnel were engaged in running battles with NUP and FDC supporters who wanted to accompany their candidates Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine and Patrick Oboi Amuriat respectively.

Kyagulanyi and Amuriat were brutally manhandled by security agencies while going to and from the nomination venue at Kyambogo University sports grounds. Amuriat even lost his shoes during the scuffles while being whisked to Kyambogo by military and police and was nominated barefoot while Kyagulanyi was blocked from going to NUP headquarters in Kamwokya to launch his campaign manifesto.

Kampala Metropolitan monitoring centre set at CPS recorded several cases of civilians and police officers being badly injured while a number of police and military vehicles were also damaged. FDC supporters arrested at party headquarters were detained at Katwe police station while NUP members are currently detained at the central police station (CPS), Kira road and Kasangati police stations.

Police fired teargas in Kisekka Market, Mini Price and Najjanankumbi when NUP and FDC members were celebrating their candidates’ nominations. The Electoral Commission on Tuesday concluded the two-day nominations exercise where five more candidates were duly nominated including Robert Kyagulanyi, Patrick Oboi Amuriat, Fred Mwesigye, Linda Nancy Kalembe, John Katumba, DP’s Norbert Mao, Willy Mayambala and Joseph Kabuleta.

Others nominated on the first day are the incumbent Gen. Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni, Maj. Gen. Mugisha Muntu Gregg and Lt. Gen. Henry Tumukunde.
