Bozizé ‘banned from running for CAR president’

The Constitutional Court in the Central African Republic has said that former President François Bozizé cannot run for election in the vote scheduled for 27 December, the AFP news agency reports.
The court barred him as he is facing allegations of murder and torture and has had UN sanctions slapped on him, AFP adds.
He was president for 10 years until 2013, when his overthrow precipitated years of violent chaos.
Mr Bozizé was seen as the main electoral rival to current President Faustin-Archange Touadera, AFP says.

Mozambique loses massive forest cover to smuggling
Jose Tembe
BBC News, Maputo
Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado province has already lost about 171,000 hectares (422,000 acres) of forest to smuggling, according to a recent study.
Namuno, Chiúre and Palma districts are among the most affected according to the study published by the Observatório do Meio Rural.
The study indicates that illegal and unsustainable exploitation of forest resources, itinerant agriculture and the growing demand for other non-timber forest products are the main causes of timber exploitation.
The study said the authorities should enforce a proper legal system and flush out those who are not certified to work in the forests.
