Religious Bodies and Media Should Maintain National Values.
Scholar urges media houses and religions institutions to promote and sustain the values of togetherness and harmony in the nation.
aniel Shetaye, Lecturer of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering at Hawassa University told The Ethiopian Herald that more efforts should be exerted to protect publics’ longstanding values as they enable the nation to pass through tough situations.
Mentioning the recent situation occurred in some parts of the country as a case, he opined that though various issues including political dominance have influenced these values negatively in many ways, we can see that the people are still taking care of each other and protect one another. However, more effort is needed to further maintain the values as frequent instability might fade them out.
As to him, media houses should play an essential role in this regard. They should be the voices of the people, not just a stage for political party manifesto.
They need to take their societal responsibility in to account and discharge their duties accordingly, he stressed.
“The media should work to promote and enhance such responsibilities and other values so as to transfer it to the next generation.”
Similarly, religious institutions should also use their influential power to educate and shape their followers. As a result, they need to strive to create a responsible citizen in many aspects. As the nation is known for keeping religious difference, it is expected that these institutions to play crucial role.
Appreciating the societies who are lending hands for those who were victimized in the recent unrest, he urges both institutions to be conscious of their actions as they could easily affect people’s perception and influence them both negatively and positively.
