The Three Major Challenges Facing Ethiopia

The Ethiopian government has reportedly agreed to an AU investigation into atrocities and possible war crimes commited during the ongoing conflict in it’s Tigray region that has left thousands of people, homeless, starving and fleeing for their lives, according to multiple human rights bodies.

This while the country prepares for a June 2021 general election during the Covid-19 pandemic. The delayed 2020 poll due to the spread of the coronavirus was itself the spark that led to the current war in Tigray, and the question remains how voting can take place with widespread insecurity and a lack of assistance in that region, including the thousands of refugees in Sudan.

Ethiopia’s relationship with Sudan is also under pressure due to a border dispute between the two neighbours as well as the protracted negotiations – involving Egypt – over the filing of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam on the Nile.
