CAR court dashes prospect of constitution shake-up
A court in the Central African Republic (CAR) has annulled presidential decrees setting up a committee to rewrite the constitution.
The move by President Faustin Archange Touadera had fuelled fears that he was seeking a third term in office.
The court ruled the decrees unconstitutional.
Last month opposition and civil society groups staged a protest in the capital Bangui against them.
President Touadera won a second term in 2020 in a controversial poll that took place against a backdrop of violence by rebel groups.
In recent years he has relied on military contractors from Russia to help push back the rebels.
This has led to worsening relations with the CAR’s main donors including the EU, the US and France.
