Christian Kouame: Afcon-winning Fiorentina forward contracts malaria
Fiorentina forward Christian Kouame is in hospital after contracting malaria, says the Serie A side.
Kouame, 26, was part of the recent Africa Cup of Nations-winning Ivory Coast squad.
He tested positive for the disease after being unwell on Tuesday night, his Italian club said in a statement.
“The player has been hospitalised for treatment and his condition will be re-assessed over the coming days,” added Fiorentina.
Kouame made four appearances for his country as they hosted and won the tournament, beating Nigeria 2-1 in the final.
His last appearance came in a 2-1 win over Mali in the quarter-finals.
Kouame has played 22 times for Fiorentina this season, scoring once.
