Economic Recovery in South Africa Could Cause Social Unrest
EFF MP S’Lindile Ann Luthuli has warned that South Africa could ‘erupt’ as a result of Cyril Ramaphosa’s Economic Recovery Plan. The president unveiled a new round of measures and investments to help drag the country out of a financial black hole, caused by COVID-19. But for the Red Berets, the interventions don’t go far enough.
EFF: ECONOMIC RECOVERY PLAN WILL CAUSE ‘SOCIAL UNREST’
Luthuli spoke to Parliament on Wednesday, as the house debated the presidential speech. She rallied against the various inequalities that have surfaced in South African society, and claimed that Ramaphosa may take SA ‘to the brink of disaster’.
The MP also reasoned that a rising unemployment rate, mixed with the obvious class differences in this country, could create a ‘recipe for social unrest’. She finished her address by accusing the president of pandering to ‘white interests’:

“South Africa is at a crossroads. More than 40% of the population is unemployed, and this will certainly rise if nothing drastic is done. We’re the most unequal society in the world, and these class differences are also racialized in this country.”
“This is all a recipe for social unrest, which, if it erupts, will spare no one in this country. This crisis, therefore, requires bold leadership that is honest with itself and with the rest of the South African population. Ramaphosa does not have any plans to resolve the poverty, unemployment, and inequality that’s risks taking this country to the precipice of disaster.”
