Egypt frees people accused of ‘stripping’ Coptic woman
A court in Egypt has acquitted three people accused of stripping a Coptic Christian woman in her seventies and dragging her through the streets of her village.
The incident occurred in May 2016 during a violent quarrel between residents of the village of al-Karam – which is reported to have erupted after rumours of an affair between a Coptic man and a married Muslim woman.
Souad Thabet was assaulted and stripped of her clothes in front of her house as Coptic Christians came under attack.
The three defendants were sentenced last year to 10 years in prison.
