South African court rejects Oscar Pistorius parole request
The application for parole of former South African Paralympic champion Oscar Pistorius, convicted of the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, was denied Friday, said the lawyer for the victim’s family.
“I do not know for what reasons the application was refused, we were only informed that it was refused and that it would be reviewed in a year,” said the victims’ family lawyer Tania Koen.
A hearing before an ad hoc commission was held in the morning and was to inform the lawyers of both parties after deliberation.
The court in Pretoria justified the decision saying that Pistorius had not served the “minimum detention period”.
Pistorius was sentenced 10 years ago for the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
In 2017, the Supreme Court of Appeals sentenced Pistorius to 13 years and 5 months in prison.
