South African president signs controversial health law
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa on Wednesday, May 15 gave the green light to a new health-insurance law, despite facing tough upcoming elections.
The law aims to fix the country’s health system and make treatment fairer. It stops private companies from insuring treatments covered by the National Health Insurance plan.
Some groups say this law goes against the constitution and plan to challenge it in court.
Health Minister Joe Phaahla explained, “Our health systems are unfair and need big changes to make them fair and sustainable.” Ramaphosa signed the law in Pretoria on Wednesday.
