Uganda People’s Defense Forces Arrested for Alleged Disappearing of a Motorcycle and a Gun
The Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) is holding a 26-year-old army officer alleged to have stolen a gun and a motorcycle that he disappeared with.
The UPDF Spokesperson, Brig. Flavia Byekwaso identified the suspect as Private Robert Chemutai, attached to Ruhengere UPDF detach in Kiruhura district.
Byekwaso said that they recovered an AK47 gun that Chemutai had stolen from his colleague in the barracks and four magazines with 119 rounds of ammunition.
“After stealing the gun, Chemutai used it to rob a motorcycle from a bodaboda rider whom he put on a gunpoint and disappeared with his bike,” she said.
She said that Chemutei was arrested from Mukono town on Kampala-Jinja Highway in front of Stanbic Bank on Thursday (October 22, 2020) as he was on his way back to his home district in Kapchorwa.
Mukono Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Fred Bamwine, told New Vision that Chemutei was arrested after an alert to the security team by one of the concerned residents.
Bamwine said that the suspect had knocked a fellow rider who was carrying a passenger whose property got spoilt.
“Chemutai was riding a bodaboda registration number, UFA 025D whereas Eric Nkajja’s, whom he knocked was UFA 320D,” he said.
Bamwine said that in the scuffle which transpired as Chemutai wanted to disappear without compensating what he had damaged, the residents saw a gun which he had wrapped in a carpet.
He added that the residents became suspicious, therefore calling the security team which intervened and had him arrested.
Brig. Byekwaso said that Chemutai is currently detained at Botanical headquarters, an LDU Battalion in Mukono district as he awaits prosecution.
RDC Bamwine thanked the residents for being vigilant and their decision to call the security that arrested Chemutai before he had started misusing the stolen gun.
